Ford announced Friday it's reducing production of its F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup truck, starting April 1, due to slowing demand for EVs. The automaker said the Lightning cuts are being made to achieve the "optimal balance of production, sales growth and profitability." But since Ford is cutting back EV production, the automaker's goal of scaling up its EV buildout could be delayed. In fact, the Maverick Hybrid sales exceeded the F-150 Hybrid last year with a 67% increase to more than 52,300 vehicles. CNN —Ford will shut down one of two production shifts in April at the Dearborn, Michigan, factory that builds the F-150 Lightning electric pickup. The move is part of “matching F-150 Lightning production to customer demand,” the company said Friday. While sales of electric vehicles increased in 2023, the growth was slower than many industry experts had expected. Ford still projects an increase in Lightning sales this year after a 55% jump to 24,000 trucks last year. The 24,000 in Lightning sales is still a small fraction of overall Ford F-series pickup sales.

New York CNN —Nearly 900,000 Americans sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner this week will have unions – and the double-digit pay increases they won – to thank. The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. The union won a contract approved by 86% of membership who voted on ratification.

☆ Auto strikes sink US manufacturing output in October

Manufacturing output fell 0.7% last month, the Federal Reserve said on Thursday. Excluding motor vehicles and parts, manufacturing production edged up 0.1%. Overall industrial production dropped 0.6% in October after edging up 0.1% in September. It is now eight-tenths of a percentage point below to its 1972–2022 average. The operating rate for the manufacturing sector slipped to 77.2% from 77.8% in the prior month and is one percentage point below its long-run average.

If workers had rejected the deal, it could have brought about a resumption of the strikes at the company. Teamster members voted 86% in favor of that union’s deal with UPS in July. Others said that the union could achieve even better deals if members voted no.

DETROIT (AP) — Autoworkers at the first Ford factory to go on strike have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a tentative contract agreement reached with the company. About 3,300 United Auto Workers union members went on strike at the plant Sept. 15 after the union's contract with Ford expired. They remained on the picket lines until Oct. 25, when the union announced the tentative deal with Ford. Production workers voted 81% to ratify the deal, while skilled trades workers voted 90% in favor. At its peak 46,000 union members had gone on strike at eight assembly plants and 38 parts warehouses across the nation.

There are about 4,800 UAW members at the plant, and nearly 4,000 of those were either on strike or laid-off by the company during the work stoppage. Nearly 4,000 UAW members went on strike October 8 after members rejected an 11th-hour deal reached a week before that appeared to have averted a strike. The Michigan Assembly plant was the first Ford factory to go on strike on September 15, so the workers there lost more paychecks than any other union members at Ford. In total, there are 36 different locals at Ford — 35 still have to vote.

Modeled after the Ford agreement, the UAW reached a tentative labor deal with General Motors (GM) early Monday and one with Chrysler-parent Stellantis (STLA) on Saturday. The only third-quarter sales beat was in Ford Blue, its legacy internal combustion engine unit, which also includes hybrids. However, Ford Blue missed on EBIT (earnings before taxes and interest). We think the automaker can achieve these goals since it has support from its resilient Ford Blue segment, which continues to be profitable in all regions.

(AP) — Throughout its 5-week-old strikes against Detroit’s automakers, the United Auto Workers union has cast an emphatically combative stance, reflecting the style of its pugnacious leader, Shawn Fain. Officials at all three companies note that they have sweetened pay offers and offered numerous other concessions. Fain has even sought 32-hour work weeks for 40 hours of pay — a demand that even many union workers call unrealistic. In a departure from the style of past UAW leaders, Fain has insulted CEOs and publicly revealed the companies' pay offers. A new Bloomberg model shows a better-than-50% chance a recession could begin this year. According to Anna Wong and Tom Orlik, two chief economists at Bloomberg Economics, the model works "fairly well" at matching previous calls of recession. UAW President Shawn Fain has transformed the rituals of contract talks with General Motors(GM.N), Ford(F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) into a high-stakes, made-for-media game. GM and Ford said Monday they were indefinitely laying off another 500 workers at four Midwestern plants, citing the impact of the walkouts. Analysts looking ahead to third-quarter financial results this month are starting to reckon the costs of what the UAW calls "Stand up strikes." Ford plans four EV battery plants in the U.S. - three under joint ventures with South Korean battery maker SK On(096770.KS). GM's joint venture battery plants also have separate status and GM has declined to include them in negotiations.

New York CNN —General Motors and Ford are laying off 500 additional workers between them, blaming the expansion of the strike announced by the United Auto Workers union at those companies on Friday. General Motors said it was laying off 164 workers at stamping plants in Parma, Ohio, and Marion, Indiana. Ford said it laid off 330 workers at its Chicago Stamping Plant and Lima Engine Plant following the union’s decision Friday to strike its Chicago Assembly plant, which made the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs. It had previously laid off 600 hourly workers at the Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan who were not on strike. Those benefits for both strikers and laid-off UAW members will cost the union about $14.3 million a week, but it went into the strike with $825 million in its strike fund.
